CREATIONS

Carlos Moro has created one of the main qualitative winery groups at national and international level, characterised by a passion and care for the land, continuous innovation and the pursuit of excellence as a rule. This pursuit has led him to being granted six major designations of origin in Spain: Ribera del Duero, Rioja, Rueda, Toro, Cigales and Ribeiro, for nine wineries, including alcoholic-free wines.

In 1988, I carried on my family’s tradition of cultivating our vineyards and making wine, and I created Bodega Matarromera, whose first wine was elected as the Best Wine of the World at the International Competition held in Turkey.

In the late 90’s, there was a great demand for Ribera del Duero wines, both in Spain and abroad. To preserve Matarromera as a qualitative winery with a very limited production and wines with personality, I conceived a new oenological and business creature with its own idiosyncrasy to produce modern wines of great quality. This was the birth of Emina Ribera Winery.

After that, Valdelosfrailes came into being in the Cigales DO, with magnificent goblet-trained vineyards. I wanted to make claret wines, but also aged red wines with a new concept. It was the first step towards the group’s diversification with the aim of incorporating modernity, technology and avant-garde innovations to a classic land with great potential.

For years, we have endeavoured to produce great white wines from our own vineyards. It was in 2007 when we were able to do so and secure the Rueda Designation of Origin with the birth of the Emina Winery in Medina del Campo, with the aim of producing high-quality white wines from exceptional varieties such as Verdejo, Sauvignon Blanc, Viura, Muscatel and Chardonnay. Thus, the company embarked on the production of this kind of wines.

The challenge of producing new fine and elegant wines with the toro red wine grape variety and finding a fantastic natural and ecological place in Valdefinjas, led me to incorporating the Cyan Winery in the Toro DO, where I started making one of my most personal wines, Carlos Moro Finca Valmediano, as well as the Granza organic wines. With this Winery, we managed to be in the top five of the designations of origin of Duero in 2007: Ribera, Rueda, Cigales and Toro.

Located in San Vicente de la Sonsierra, in the heart of the Rioja Alta region, this winery seeks to become a referential on a region where excellence and quality are the hallmarks, in both the production methods and wines. For history, tradition, quality and for market share, this Apellation of Origin constitutes a respected introduction card of the quality Spanish wines around the world. After more than two years of exploration and searching excellent terroirs, in 2014 I aim to create a new landmark in the region with the seal of Matarromera, its prestigious wines its commitment to innovation, sustainability and diversification.

As a result of our alliance and collaboration with great Galician winegrowers in the Ribeiro DO, we have expanded our knowledge of its magnificent native grape varieties (namely the Treixadura, Godello and Torrontés varieties), and in 2019, we disembarked in this region with the Casar de Vide Winery, as a response to our desire to expand into new horizons to make unique wines from the most distinguished Spanish regions. However, our first Ribeiro is Carlos Moro Finca San Cibrao, which has been very well-received by consumers.

At the same time, we started an R&D+I project that resulted in a milestone in our history in 2004: the making of low-alcoholic-graduation and alcoholic-free wines under the WIN brand name. Their making is achieved through our own ground-breaking technology and patent in our molecular deconstruction plant in Valbuena de Duero (Valladolid). It is a differential product line of great social value, which has been increasingly demanded, as it correlates with the new habits and way of life of today’s global consumers.

Also in 2004, the del Duero distillery was incorporated, where our own spirits, liqueurs and brandy are made using artisan methods from our own wines and grape marc.

As I am passionate about challenges and opportunities, after deeply studying the particularities of olive cultivation on the plateau, we acquired around 15-year-old olive trees and planted the first hectares and, in 2014, we built our Almazara Oil Mill, the first ecological mill in Castilla y León, in the Emina Rueda complex. Just as we set out to produce the best wine in the world, this time we are determined to produce the best extra-virgin olive oil possible and to recover the production tradition in this area.

Our experience in the world of wine and our strong investment in R&D+I allowed for the creation of a new line of work; the birth of the cosmetics brand ESDOR in 2010. After several years of research, Bodegas Familiares Matarromera managed to extract from the skin of the tempranillo variety grape a polyphenolic compound of natural origin with antioxidant and protective properties that was patented under the Eminol brand name. This patent also gave rise to food supplements in capsules. Today, at least 85% of the ingredients of each of the references are of natural origin, responding to consumers who are looking for natural, effective and responsible products.

For decades, I have been making special wines with my style, name and my own brand. They bear my name because they are signature wines that reflect my commitment to the pursuit of oenological excellence and my passion for the terroir. They convey my personal taste and way of winemaking.

The process of creating a signature wine begins by choosing a vineyard that is special for a particular reason. These wines come from exceptional estates, which give the wines a unique singularity. The first three were two red wines and a white wine: Cyan Personal Selection by Carlos Moro, Valdelosfrailes Personal Selection by Carlos Moro and Emina Personal Selection by Carlos Moro, all of them presented with an elegant black label created by my daughter Beatriz.

I also periodically elaborated special and differential wines for the Vinoselección Wine Club since the first years of this winery.

Next, my collection of estate wines is worth mentioning. The first was CM Finca Las Marcas, from the Rueda Designation of Origin, a barrel-fermented Verdejo from a sandy land in Villalba de Adaja (Valladolid). In the case of Toro, we owe this wine to a 130-year-old plot with exceptional qualities that are transformed into the CM Finca Valmediano. The CM Valdehierro comes precisely from the Valdehierro area, in Cigales and the land of the same name. For the Rioja DO, CM Viña Garugele, a centenary vineyard that, like the rest, is made separately and follows a very special protocol. But which was also certified as Singular by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food in 2019. My passion for Galicia helped me find the San Cibrao hamlet, on the banks of the Miño river, and from where CM Finca San Cibrao was born. Finally, this wine tour takes us to the Ribera del Duero where Picón de Zurita delights the most exquisite palates. Its grapes come from the most iconic vineyards of our family and before that, from the Jesuits who cultivated that land in the meander of the Duero River whose right bank has the Ribera del Duero Designation of Origin.

Rento deserves a special mention, because I make it using artisan methods and very much to my own taste, besides having my signature. It is the one that has more of me, because I reside most of the year a few meters from their barrels. I make it at the Renacimiento Winery, a family-run winery and home, with a production of only 15,000 bottles per vintage.
